Joel L. Cohen, MD is an internationally-recognized expert on skin cancer and aesthetics. He is the Director of AboutSkin Dermatology and DermSurgery in Englewood and Lone Tree, Colorado. Dr. Cohen was elected to serve as a national instructor in dermatologic surgical and aesthetic procedures by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) for its ASDS Preceptorship Program. He serves on the volunteer faculty of the University of Colorado as an Associate Clinical Professor. Dr. Cohen is Past Chair of the ASDS Patient Education Committee (2005-2007), and is a Past President of the Colorado Dermatologic Society (2006). From 2004-2007 and now again from 2009 to present, he serves on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery (ASCDAS). In 2005, he was the recipient of the ASDS Public Service Award, and in 2007 he received the ASCDAS Distinguished Service Award.
Dr. Cohen has published over 110 medical articles and book chapters, and has co-authored the McGraw-Hill aesthetic textbook released in September of 2008 called Aesthetic Rejuvenation: A Regional Approach. He is currently the single editor for a Blackwell-Wiley textbook on botulinum toxins for release in 2012, and is also a co-editor for a skin cancer reconstruction textbook as well. Recently, he co-authored the International Expert's Roundtable on botulinum toxins (in International Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy), two important skin cancer reconstruction articles on advanced flaps (in Journal of Drugs in Dermatology), a skin cancer article looking at data from 20 Mohs surgeons across the country (in Dermatologic Surgery), a Consensus on botulinum toxins and fillers (in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery), a botulinum toxin overview (in Aesthetic Surgery Journal), a single author review article on Fillers and Complications (in Dermatologic Surgery), and a single author review of Bimatoprost (Latisse) (in Dermatologic Surgery). He also participates in many cosmetic clinical trials ranging from injectable cosmetic agents to lasers and topical therapies (including many FDA studies such as Restylane, Perlane, JuveDerm, Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Latisse as well as many other laser studies and topical skin-care studies).
In addition to a regular surgical pearls column in Skin and Aging, he is on the editorial staff for several journals including: Dermatologic Surgery, Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Cosmetic Dermatology, Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, Skin and Aging, Dermanities, Aesthetic Dermatology News, Merge, TheDerm.org and Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. He has been an invited reviewer for Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS). He has served as the Case Report Editor for Journal of Drugs in Dermatology since 2009.
Dr. Cohen has been invited to speak at numerous national aesthetic and dermatologic meetings including the annual meetings of the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), American Academy of Facial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, ASCDAS, Skin Cancer Foundation, American College of Mohs Surgery, Harvard's Aesthetic Course 2010 and 2011, Allergan's NEF, Radiesse MEF, ASDS Regional Filler Courses (Houston, NY, Miami, Atlanta), The CORE at University of Miami, Pacific Dermatologic Association, Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, Colorado Dermatologic Society, Pacific Northwest Dermatologic Society, Skin Disease Education Foundation, Maui Derm, Advances in Cosmetic and Medical Dermatology, Cosmetic Boot Camp, South Beach Symposium, NYU Advances in Dermatology, Mt. He has also lectured extensively internationally including: the International Society of Dermatologic Surgery (Vienna), European Masters in Aesthetics and Aging (EMAA) in Paris 2008 & 2010, the World Congress on Cancers of the Skin in Israel 2009, 5-Continent Aesthetic Meeting in Southern France 2009 & 2011, the International Masters Course on Aging Skin (IMCAS) in Paris 2010 & 2011 and the World Congress of Dermatology in Seoul, Korea in 2011. He also was invited to be one of the first dermatologists ever to lecture at the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) annual meeting (Fall 2011).
Dr. Cohen has been voted by his peers as one of Denver's Top Doctors in 5280 magazine SEVEN times, including listings for cosmetic procedures as well as dermatology. He has been quoted in several newspapers and magazines including Glamour, Seventeen, The New York Times, Shape, USA Today Supplement, Marie Claire, Alternative Medicine, Cooking Light, MSN.com, ABC.com, Esquire's Big Black Book, Real Simple and MORE Magazine. He has made over 45 appearances on local Denver TV stations on dermatology, skin cancer and aesthetic issues. In October 2010, Dr. Cohen was featured on the Emmy-Award winning TV show "The Doctors" as an expert dermatologist & Mohs surgeon.
