WB A.M. Sunday - UVA protection After going for a long ride, Shelly Laborde and her sister Kim love taking the kids to the beach at Cherry Creek Reservoir. One of the first things they do is load them up with plenty of sunblock. Apply it in on your ears boys. But even though they're using an SPF of 50, they may not be getting any protection from UVA rays, the kind that penetrate deeper into your skin. "UVA is very important in #1 premature aging especially important in melanoma and basil skin carcenoma, two very important types of skin cancer." Dr. Joel Cohen says the problem with most sunscreens is that the bold words on the bottle tend to mislead people about how much UVA protection they're getting.
WB2Day - Sunscreen Safety Ten Californians are suing sunscreen manufacturers in a class-action suit. Joel Cohen , MD, dermatologist, says really just focused on SPF and unfortunately we know that that's not the most important aspect of sunscreen use. Look for ingredients like zinc oxide at 6%, look for ingredients like titanium dioxide and there is an ingredient called avobenzone which historically has not been that stable but now there are several new products like helioplex and probably a product that will be out soon called Mexril, those ingredients make avobenzone more stable.
