filler Substances

There are many different agents currently available on the US market for "filling" of the face. We recommend consulting with our expert physicians to help select the right filler to help you attain your specific esthetic goals. Below are several of the filling substances frequently injected in our clinic.

FDA approved Fillers:

In youth, an abundance of two important substances, collagen and hyaluronic acid, keeps your skin looking smooth and supple. Collagen is a protein that provides your skin with structural support. Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar found in all living cells that attracts and binds water, hydrating your skin and giving it volume. With time, sunlight and other factors, collagen and hyaluronic acid in your skin diminish, the skin loses structure and volume, and unwelcome lines and wrinkles appear.

There is quite a buffet of filler substances readily available and more in development.  It is during your consultation with Dr. Cohen or Dr. Szabo that the correct filler or combination is used to best meet your rejuvenating goals.

Restylane

Restylane is an FDA-approved dermal filler substance used to treat bothersome wrinkles such as the nasolabial folds and smile lines as well as for lip enhancement/augmentation. The active ingredient of Restylane is hyaluronic acid, a molecule naturally occurring in our skin.

The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is a crystal-clear gel called NASHA, or Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. NASHA is biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid. This quality virtually eliminates any risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction.

Results after Restylane injection are immediate with minimal to no reaction in the skin. As with all fillers, some temporary swelling and redness may occur in the days following injection.  Studies have shown that the average treatment results last six months or even longer. The unique NASHA technology helps maintain the cosmetic effect until the injected material is nearly gone.

The characteristics of Restylane, including its’ longevity and completely natural feel make it a great choice as a filler and are the reasons for its extreme popularity.

Dr. Cohen is a national trainer, speaker and Clinical Trial Primary Investigator for Medicis, the company that distributes Restylane. If you want to enjoy a smoother, more youthful facial appearance for the next six months, or even longer, ask Dr. Cohen if Restylane is right for you.

Capitque (Injectible Gel)

Captique Injectable is an FDA-approved non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid dermal filler. The way your skin looks is directly related to the way your skin is supported. As we age, the natural support layers in the skin break down resulting in the formation of wrinkles. Captique, a clear gel containing a purified form of hyaluronic acid, adds volume lost during the aging process by temporarily smoothing out facial lines and wrinkles. Captique is injected just under the skin’s surface in order to temporarily correct wrinkles around the mouth and eyes.

  • Immediate treatment—no skin testing required.
  • Instant and long lasting results
  • Simple procedure that can be done during your lunch hour
  • Hyaluronic acid-based fillers have been used in combination with collagen-based dermal fillers like CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast.

Sculptura

scuptra logoAt AboutSkin Dermatology safety and clinical studies are the essential roots to our practice.  It is important to know that when the FDA approves a specific device for a specific indication—it is usually best to limit use to that area, until more data is available.  Currently, the FDA has approved the use of Sculptra specifically for treatment of Lipoatrophy, a condition associated with HIV treatment.  We abide by their recommendation and currently only offer this treatment to those patients until more research in immunocompetent patients is available.

When the word lipoatrophy is broken down, "lipo" means "fat," and "atrophy" means "the loss of." Facial lipoatrophy is the loss of fat beneath the skin, which can result in sunken cheeks, indentations, and hollow eyes.

Following is a chart demonstrating the typical progression of lipoatrophy.

Progression of Lipoatrophy

Sculptra® is an enduring treatment approved by the FDA for restoration and/or correction of the signs of facial fat loss, or lipoatrophy, in people with human immunodeficiency virus. It is the first FDA-approved product of its kind for this condition.

Scultpra is a synthetic injectable material known as “poly-L-lactic acid.”  Poly-L-lactic acid is biocompatible (a material that does not harm the body) and biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body).

Facial fat loss, or lipoatrophy, is the loss of fat beneath the skin, which can result in sunken cheeks, indentations, and hollow eyes. Sculptra® is a safe, synthetic, and biocompatible material that is injected below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss. It provides a gradual and significant increase in skin thickness, improving the appearance of folds and sunken areas. No skin testing is required.

During your consultation, Dr. Cohen will determine approximately the appropriate number of treatment sessions and the amount of Sculptra you will need at each session. Patients with severe facial fat loss may require 3 to 6 treatment sessions.  In a clinical study of Sculptra, the treatment results lasted for up to 2 years after the first treatment session, but as always, treatment results vary from person to person. Touch-up treatments may be needed to maintain the desired effect.

Sculptra® has been safely used outside the United States since 1999 in over 150,000 patients under the trade names New-Fill™ and Sculptra®.
