AboutSkin Dermatology is proud to be a national training site for the StarLux Pulsed Light and Laser System by Palomar. This system is special because of its’ cooling properties, allowing for more comfort during the procedure, while still attaining the best results.

Although acne can often be managed with medications—including both topical and oral—more often people are turning to laser treatments as adjunctive treatments. This can often help reduce the need for oral treatments, as well as reduce the appearance of facial scars as a result of the acne.
The Palomar LuxV dual band handpiece that we use at AboutSkin Dermatology employs a broad spectrum of light to attack acne on two fronts:
- The LuxV’s short wavelength (400-700 nm) is ideal for absorption by porphyrins; this destroys p. acnes bacteria for a quick clearance of current acne breakouts
- The longer wavelength (870-1200 nm) penetrates deeper into the hyperactive sebaceous glands and slows down their metabolism to prevent future acne from forming.
Most need a series of 3-5 treatments spaced 1 month apart for maximal benefit. Call us if you are interested in this non-invasive procedure with minimal downtime.

The Palomar StarLux system is excellent at reducing the increased pigmentation (redness) in hypertrophic and keloid scars by collapsing the surface vessels that cause the redness. Once these vessels are collapsed, the scar lightens in overall appearance. Dr. Cohen frequently incorporates such treatments a follow-up visits for his Mohs Surgical Patients.

Palomar’s lasers emit a focused beam of light which passes harmlessly through the outer layer of skin and is absorbed primarily by the tattoo ink. The light is converted into heat which breaks the ink into tiny particles. The ink fragments are carried away by the body’s lymphatic system. The tattoo will then fade over a series of treatments.

Photofacial Rejuvenation with the StarLux is designed to effectively combat effects of aging and damaged skin with minimal downtime. Treatments can cover the full face, neck, chest and hands. The light energy stimulates the production of collagen which ultimately softens the appearance of aging skin without damaging the top layer of skin, the epidermis. You will notice a reduction in fine lines/wrinkles, decreased pore size, as well as diminished redness and spots after just one treatment. With the series of 5 treatments spaced out over 3 weeks, you will notice continued improvement. Each treatment is approximately 30 minutes and is here in our office. Immediately following treatment there may be some redness that fades as you walk to your car! Downtime is essentially nonexistent, but as always, you need to continue wearing sunscreen daily to prevent further damage from the suns’ UV rays. Following the 5 treatment series, many patients elect to come back for maintenance therapy 2 times a year. Our patients have been thrilled with the the results of PhotoFacial treatments!

Stop with the razors, waxing, plucking and painful electrolysis! If you are looking for permanent hair reduction results, we use one of the most advanced systems available. The Palomar StarLux system combines the permanency of electrolysis with the fastness of waxing. Quick, effective, affordable, and convenient….here in our office! This light source emits pulses of intense light into the hair follicles in the active growth phase and knocks them out. Usually 6 treatments are need to completely disable all the hair follicles, as only a percentage are in the active phase at any one treatment.
Most hairs removed with this system will not grow back for months, while other hairs may not grow back at all. Hair that does grow back is often lighter in color and thinner in texture.
With the StarLux’s special cooling system, the treatment is significantly more comfortable than that with other lasers or waxing. We are happy to prescribe a topical anesthetic if you think that would make you more comfortable. As this is working at the root of the hair, there is no need to let your hair “grow out” for the treatments. With this system, you can remain essentially hair-free all the time!
This revolutionary system works much faster than other systems, and can be used on a variety of different skin types. Hair removal can be used for the legs, face neck, back, abdomen/bikini line, breasts, arms, underarms, essentially anywhere you have unwanted hair growth. We are delighted to present you with the newest Fractional Resurfacing technology presented by Palomar, the company that developed and patented all Fractional Technology. AboutSkin become the first practice in Colorado to have this technology back in August when Dr. Cohen was one of the first instructors for this technology in the country. This revolutionary treatment involves non-ablative soft tissue coagulation and skin resurfacing with excellent results and almost no downtime. Sending tiny microbeams of energy deep into the skin allows the restorative healing to occur in both the vertical and horizontal planes - resulting in maximal tissue regeneration with unsurpassed healing. The result: a reversal of some of the signs of photodamaged skin. Softening creping skin, reduction of wrinkles and evening-out pigmentation can be seen after a series of treatments. Simple topical anestheia is usually adequate for comfort and there are no dye applications. Expect treatment appointments to last for 30 minutes.
