Joel L. Cohen, MDBoard Certified Dermatologist
Fellowship-trained, Mohs Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology
Dr. Cohen has published over 180 scientific medical articles and book chapters, and has co-authored the McGraw-Hill aesthetic textbook called Aesthetic Rejuvenation: A Regional Approach. He is also the co-author for the Skin Cancer Reconstruction textbook called Reconstructive Conundrums in Dermatologic Surgery published by Wiley-Blackwell. He is currently the co-editor for a Wiley-Blackwell textbook on botulinum toxins. Among these publications, he has co-authored the International Expert’s Roundtable on botulinum toxins (in Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy), two important skin cancer reconstruction articles on advanced flaps (in Journal of Drugs in Dermatology), two skin cancer articles looking at data from 20 Mohs surgeons across the country (in Dermatologic Surgery), a Consensus on botulinum toxins and fillers (in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery), a botulinum toxin overview (in Aesthetic Surgery Journal), a single author review article on Fillers and Complications (in Dermatologic Surgery), and a single author review of Bimatoprost (Latisse) (in Dermatologic Surgery). He also participates in many cosmetic clinical trials ranging from injectable cosmetic agents to lasers and topical therapies, including many clinical studies and FDA-trials such as Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, JuveDerm, Voluma, Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Latisse as well as multiple other laser studies (for vessels, pigment and resurfacing) and topical skin-care studies (including pre-cancer lesions and acne).
In addition to a regular surgical pearls column in The Dermatologist (formerly Skin and Aging), he is on the editorial staff for several journals including: Dermatologic Surgery, Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology,Cutis, Cosmetic Dermatology, Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, The Dermatologist, Cutaneous Oncology Today, Modern Aesthetics, PRIME, British Journal of Dermatology, Trials At A Glance (TAAG), SKINmed, and Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. He has been an invited reviewer for Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD), JAMA Dermatology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) and Aesthetic Surgery Journal. He also was appointed the Case Report Editor for Journal of Drugs in Dermatology 2009 and continues to serve in that important role.
Dr. Cohen has been invited to speak at numerous national aesthetic and dermatologic meetings including the annual meetings of the American Academy of Dermatology (2004-present), American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), American Academy of Facial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, ASCDAS, International Symposium of Facial Plastic Surgery, Skin Cancer Foundation, American College of Mohs Surgery, Harvard’s Aesthetic Course (2010–present), Allergan’s NEF, Radiesse MEF, ASDS Regional Filler Courses (Houston, NY, Miami, Atlanta, San Diego), the CORE at University of Miami, Pacific Dermatologic Association, Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery, Colorado Dermatologic Society, Pacific Northwest Dermatologic Society, Orlando Derm (ODAC) as Vice Chair, Skin Disease Education Foundation (Williamsburg, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Laguna), Maui Derm, Advances in Cosmetic and Medical Dermatology, South Beach Symposium (2010-present), NYU Advances in Dermatology, Mt. He has also lectured extensively internationally including: the International Society of Dermatologic Surgery (Vienna), European Masters in Aesthetics and Aging (EMAA) in Paris, The Australasian College of Dermatology (2014) in Melbourne, the World Congress on Cancers of the Skin in Israel 2009, 5-Continent Aesthetic Meeting in Southern France (2009-present), the International Masters Course on Aging Skin (IMCAS) in Paris (2010-present), the World Congress of Dermatology in Seoul, Korea, as well as academic meetings in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Sydney, and New Zealand. He also was invited to be one of the first dermatologists to lecture at the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) annual meeting (Fall 2011). In the fall of 2012, he lectured at the U.S. Armed Forces “Wounded Warrior” scar course – called Project C.A.R.E.
Dr. Cohen has been quoted in several newspapers and magazines including Glamour, Seventeen, The New York Times (2x), Redbook, Shape (3x), USA Today Supplement, Marie Claire, Alternative Medicine, Cooking Light, New Beauty, MSN.com, ABC.com, Esquire’s Big Black Book, Real Simple, The International Business Times, Men’s Health and MORE Magazine. He regularly appears on Denver TV stations, and has made over 75 appearances discussing dermatology, skin cancer and aesthetic issues. Dr. Cohen was also featured on the Emmy-Award winning TV show “The Doctors” as an expert dermatologist & Mohs surgeon.
