Aboutskin Dermatology and Derm Surgery, PC Reviewed by Susan B.

Dr. Cohen and his team did an amazing job with my Mohs surgery on my face. I'm in my fifties and had a basil cell on the bottom of my nose alongside my face. I was referred to Dr. Cohen from my doctor. After the healing process my face looks remarkable! He is very kind and caring.

Spider veins, which are small clusters of blue, purple, or red veins typically located in the lower extremities like the thighs, calves and ankles, may lead one to avoid showing the legs. Although men can experience spider veins, women comprise the majority of the patient population, and these tiny vein clusters are not as noticeable in the male patient due to the presence of leg hair.

Spider veins tend to occur in a woman past the age of forty, but can also occur when a patient is still in his or her twenties, possibly brought on by a number of factors, including:
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal changes
  • Fluctuations in weight
  • Heredity
  • Consistently sitting or standing for long periods of time
The most successful way to treat spider veins and varicose veins is with sclerotherapy, which is performed by our expert, Dr. Michael Contreras, who has helped hundreds of patients find relief from unsightly vein clusters. Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which a specialized solution is injected into veins, resulting in their collapse. As this process occurs, these veins slowly fade away.

Constantly on top of advances in dermatology, we have chosen to treat spider and varicose veins with Asclera® , which damages the cells that line the inside of blood vessels, known as the endothelium. Seeing these damaged cells, blood platelets attach to the lining of blood vessels which, over time, clot. As a natural response, tissue gradually replaces the clotted vein.

As with all of the products and technology we use at AboutSkin Dermatology, Asclera® has been proven effective in clinical trials, with an average of 86% of patients reporting satisfactory or exemplary results from their treatment. Studies also show that patients report a significantly higher satisfaction rate with Asclera® than with sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS).

In most instances, sclerotherapy takes between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the size and number of veins being treated. Dr. Contreras carefully administers injections into each vein at precise intervals for the best possible results. Following treatment, patients are advised to wear compression stockings at all times for the first few days, and then during the day for two to three weeks.

You don't need to hide your legs due to spider veins. Visit AboutSkin Dermatology and receive excellent care from Dr. Contreras with sclerotherapy.
