Full Fellowship-Trained, Mohs/Laser/Aesthetics/Dermatologic Oncology
JOEL L. COHEN, MD is an internationally-recognized expert on skin cancer and aesthetics. Dr. Cohen has been named a US News and World Report Top Dermatologist, a Castle Connelly Regional Top Doctor (2013-2022), and has been voted by his peers as one of Denver’s Top Doctors in 5280 magazine NINE times (including listings for cosmetic procedures as well as dermatology). He is Board-Certified by the American Board of Dermatology, and has completed a Dermatologic Surgery and Aesthetic fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery (for the treatment of facial skin cancers), cutaneous oncology, facial reconstruction, cosmetic surgery and laser surgery. He is the Director of AboutSkin Dermatology and DermSurgery in Greenwood Village and Lone Tree, Colorado. Dr. Cohen was elected to serve as a national instructor in dermatologic surgical and aesthetic procedures by both the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) for the ASDS Preceptorship Program and American Society of Lasers in Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) for the ASLMS Preceptorship Program. He is the fellowship Co-Director for the ASDS Dermatologic Surgery Colorado Fellowship. He serves on the teaching faculty at a top-tier academic dermatology program as an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California at Irvine — where he was the recipient of the Faculty Teacher of the Year Award. In addition, he is honored and grateful to have been the recipient of the Patients Choice Award from 2010-2019. He has also been a recipient of the ASDS Public Service Award, the ASDS Patient Safety HERO Award, the ASCDAS Distinguished Service Award, the ASDS Traveling Mentorship and Teaching Award, and the ASDS Excellence in Education Award. In 2018, he received the Melanoma Research Foundation Humanitarian of the year award.
Dr. Cohen has published over 288 scientific medical articles and book chapters, and has co-authored 3 academic textbooks: Regional Rejuvenation (McGraw-Hill), Reconstructive Conundrums in Dermatologic Surgery (Wiley-Blackwell) and Botulinum Toxins Cosmetic and Clinical Applications (Wiley-Blackwell); and co-authored the Derm Directory (eds. 1-7) as well. Dr. Cohen is Past Chair of the ASDS Patient Education Committee, and is a Past President of the Colorado Dermatologic Society. Twice, he served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery (ASCDAS). He was elected to the Board of Directors of DASIL (Dermatologic and Aesthetic Surgery International League) in 2011, and also has served on the scientific board for the large international plastic surgery meeting IMCAS (International Master Course on Aging Skin) in Paris, and the 5-Continent Aesthetic Meeting in Barcelona, Spain. Dr. Cohen is currently the Chief-Editor for DermTube.com and ModernAesthetics.tv, has been selected to serve on the New Beauty Magazine Brain Trust & Medical Advisory Board, and has been selected to the Aesthetic Multispecialty Society (AMS) Scientific Board.
He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan and Brandeis University—where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude. He received his MD degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, and graduated with Honors. He also participates in many cosmetic clinical trials ranging from injectable cosmetic agents to lasers and topical therapies – – including many clinical studies and FDA-trials such as Restylane, Perlane/Restylane Lyft, Radiesse, JuveDerm, Voluma, Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, Revance and Latisse as well as multiple laser studies (for vessels, pigment and resurfacing), skin tightening (Ulthera and Genius RF), and topical skin-care studies (including pre-cancer lesions and acne).

He also was appointed the Case Report Editor for Journal of Drugs in Dermatology 2009-present.

He also was invited to be one of the first dermatologists to lecture at the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) annual meeting (Fall 2011), and lectured at the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery 2020 virtual meeting in the product theater on Dysport data. In addition, he has lectured at the U.S. Armed Forces “Wounded Warrior” scar course – called Project C.A.R.E.
