Our very own Dr. Joel Cohen literally wrote the textbook on injectables like Dysport® and Xeomin®. The Denver-based Board-Certified Dermatologist at AboutSkin Dermatology and DermSurgery authored 400 pages (the largest to date on this topic) devoted to botulinum toxin-based treatments used most commonly in the field of cosmetic dermatology to relax the facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles during animation) to form.
Choosing the right person to inject it makes all the difference. All of the physicians at AboutSkin Dermatology are Board-Certified Dermatologists with experience, training, and know-how in a range of treatments, including Dysport® and Xeomin®, as well as the related BOTOX® Cosmetic and Jeuveau™. Aesthetics are not a parttime “side-gig” for us—we are well-trained on these procedures, are tested on their nuances in residency and as part of our rigorous board certification, and perform these treatments every day in our offices.
Dysport® and Xeomin® are both FDA cleared to reduce the severity of frown lines between the eyebrows. Also known as 11s for the way they resemble the number made of two, short vertical marks, these frown lines are the result of a lifetime of squints and scowls. They can deepen and become more pronounced over time due to some structures and structural support that can be lost through some chronologic aging factors, as well as environmental exposures (like sun exposure, smoke, and other pollutants).
Muscles contract when they receive a signal to do so via a specialized cell known as a neuron. Dysport® and Xeomin® block contractions in wrinkle-forming muscles by disrupting this typical flow of neuron-signaling.
Once injected into a targeted muscle, the active ingredient in Dysport® and Xeomin®—a purified form of botulinum toxin—interferes with the neurons’ transmission process. The signal chain is disrupted, so muscles stay at rest, even as surrounding muscles respond and pull the skin into specific expressions. This reduced activity can last for months, after which motion gradually returns.
Patients can return for maintenance treatments by routinely scheduling injections or coming in as needed to keep their skin looking smooth.
All neuromodulators work the same way. They have slight variations in terms of how quickly they take effect, how far they can spread from the injection site, how long they last, and other variables.
While Dysport® and its fellow neuromodulators are ideal for relaxing muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, other facial lines and creases have different sources and so require different solutions.
Dermal fillers are the treatment of choice for adding volume to areas where collagen loss has led to the formation of static wrinkles, hollows, and other signs of aging. Fillers can work with Dysport® and other injectables to address multiple problems.
In addition to creases, volume loss can also cause skin laxity. Genius® RF and Ultherapy® use energy to promote renewed collagen building for more youthful contours and overall smoother skin.
