Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin condition that commonly affects children but can occur at any age. At AboutSkin Dermatology and Aesthetics, our Board-Certified Dermatologists provide comprehensive evaluation and effective treatments for managing these skin lesions through evidence-based approaches.

What Is Molluscum Contagiosum?

When the molluscum contagiosum virus infects the skin, it creates small, dome-shaped bumps with a characteristic dimple in their center. These pearly-white or flesh-colored growths can appear anywhere on the body, often clustering in certain areas. Though these viral growths typically resolve without intervention over time, many people seek treatment to prevent spread and address cosmetic concerns.

What Causes Molluscum Contagiosum?

Several factors can contribute to contracting and spreading molluscum contagiosum:

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact
  • Sharing personal items like towels or clothing
  • Swimming pools and warm, humid environments
  • Scratching or touching existing lesions
  • Compromised immune system
  • Contact sports
  • Close physical contact

Good hygiene practices can help reduce transmission risk, but the highly contagious nature of the virus means infection can occur despite preventive measures. The virus can spread from one area of the body to another through scratching or touching, and lesions may continue to appear for several weeks after initial infection.

Symptoms and Impact

Molluscum contagiosum presents with distinctive characteristics that help identify the condition:

  • The bumps are typically small, raised, and round with a waxy appearance.
  • They usually measure 2-5 millimeters in diameter.
  • A tiny indentation or dimple in the center of each bump is a hallmark sign of the infection.
  • The growths may appear alone or in groups, commonly occurring on the face, neck, arms, and legs in children, or in the genital area in adults.

While usually painless, the bumps can become red, swollen, or itchy if irritated. Some people may experience mild discomfort or concern about their appearance. When children are affected by the virus, it can be helpful to find ways to distract them from scratching or rubbing infected areas to lessen the spread of bumps.

What Molluscum Contagiosum Treatments Are Available?

At AboutSkin Dermatology and Aesthetics, we offer several treatment options for molluscum contagiosum. Our Board-Certified Dermatologists will evaluate your specific case to recommend the most appropriate treatment approach based on the number and location of lesions, your age, and other individual factors that may affect treatment success.

Cantharidin

This controlled application of a natural extract, derived from the blister beetle, creates a blister beneath the molluscum lesion. The medication is carefully applied in our office, and the area is covered with a bandage to prevent spread. Over the next few days, a blister forms and naturally lifts away the infected tissue as it heals, helping the body clear the virus. This treatment is particularly well-tolerated by children since it causes minimal discomfort during application.

Liquid Nitrogen

Also known as cryotherapy, this treatment involves precise application of extremely cold liquid nitrogen to each molluscum lesion. The freezing temperature destroys the infected tissue by creating a controlled freeze-thaw cycle. While there may be brief discomfort during application, the treatment is quick and effective. After treatment, the lesions typically form a small blister before falling off, allowing healthy skin to heal in its place. Multiple sessions may be needed depending on the number and size of lesions.
