What Molluscum Contagiosum Treatments Are Available?
At AboutSkin Dermatology and Aesthetics, we offer several treatment options for molluscum contagiosum. Our Board-Certified Dermatologists will evaluate your specific case to recommend the most appropriate treatment approach based on the number and location of lesions, your age, and other individual factors that may affect treatment success.
Cantharidin
This controlled application of a natural extract, derived from the blister beetle, creates a blister beneath the molluscum lesion. The medication is carefully applied in our office, and the area is covered with a bandage to prevent spread. Over the next few days, a blister forms and naturally lifts away the infected tissue as it heals, helping the body clear the virus. This treatment is particularly well-tolerated by children since it causes minimal discomfort during application.
Liquid Nitrogen
Also known as cryotherapy, this treatment involves precise application of extremely cold liquid nitrogen to each molluscum lesion. The freezing temperature destroys the infected tissue by creating a controlled freeze-thaw cycle. While there may be brief discomfort during application, the treatment is quick and effective. After treatment, the lesions typically form a small blister before falling off, allowing healthy skin to heal in its place. Multiple sessions may be needed depending on the number and size of lesions.
Swift Microwave Therapy
Swift microwave technology delivers precise, low-dose microwave energy to molluscum lesions and warts through rapid pulses lasting just seconds. This treatment stimulates the body’s natural immune response to target the virus while avoiding the need for cutting, freezing chemicals or prolonged discomfort. The procedure is quick and requires no dressings afterward, allowing you to return to normal activities immediately. Most patients need three or four treatments, each spaced about four weeks apart.
