Are you locked in a never-ending battle with unwanted body hair? Shaving, plucking, waxing, and other traditional techniques are temporary. As fast as hair is removed, it re-grows. At AboutSkin Dermatology and DermSurgery, PC, we offer a better solution. The modern answer to unwanted hair is prevention, using specialized lasers.

How laser hair removal works
The pigment (color) in active hair follicles will readily absorb specific wavelengths of laser energy. The reaction caused by this absorption damages the follicle, usually rendering it incapable of growing new hairs. Hair follicles that are in the resting phase will not respond to lasers until they begin the growth phase. Therefore, a series of carefully timed treatments is needed for optimal results.

Safety
Laser technology is constantly evolving and improving. In the past, laser hair removal was only recommended for select patients, specifically those with fair skin. Because the light energy acts on pigmentation, it could damage dark skin. Thankfully, extensive scientific research and technological advancement have solved this problem.

Today we have lasers that are capable of passing through the skin and safely reaching the follicles. However, this technique requires state-of-the-art equipment, and specially trained technicians. At AboutSkin Dermatology and DermSurgery, PC, we are committed to providing our patients with the very best care currently available. To that end, we equip our office with the latest advanced technology, once it has been tested and proven.

We have Palomar ICON at BOTH offices featuring SkinTel (skin intelligence melanin reader) to enhance safety and efficacy of each treatment.

Our physicians and staff members dedicate a considerable amount of time to continuing education. This includes training on the proper techniques for using new devices, as well learning about the latest medical discoveries and innovative developments in dermatology.

Results
Laser hair removal is sometimes described as permanent hair reduction, which is more technically correct. We cannot guarantee that you won’t have an occasional hair appear. However, the number and size of hairs in the future should be minimal. For most patients, a single touch-up session annually is sufficient to maintain radiant, silky-smooth skin.
