patient receiving laser treatment

If you have started researching light-based treatments for sun spots, broken capillaries or that overall ruddy, uneven tone Colorado sun tends to leave behind, you have probably run into two terms that sound almost interchangeable: IPL and BBL. They belong to the same family. They are not, however, the same tool, and the differences matter when you are deciding what to book.

BroadBand Light, or BBL, is Sciton’s name for its intense pulsed light platform. BBL HERO is the high-powered, faster evolution of that platform. Traditional IPL refers to the broader category of older intense pulsed light devices that came first. So this is less a rivalry and more a story of one technology growing up.

Here’s what that means for your skin.

What Does Traditional IPL Do?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a skin treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target pigment and visible vessels. Unlike a laser, which fires a single focused wavelength, an IPL device sends out many wavelengths at once, more like a camera flash than a laser pointer.

That scattered light gets absorbed by the darker pigment (melanin) in sun spots and the hemoglobin in tiny blood vessels. The energy converts to heat, which breaks down the unwanted pigment and collapses the targeted vessels. Over the following days, treated brown spots often darken, flake and fade, while redness gradually settles.

Because the light passes through the surface skin without removing it, IPL is non-ablative, which is why downtime tends to be minimal. It works best on lighter to medium skin tones, where there is enough contrast between the pigment being targeted and the surrounding skin.

A 2010 review in the journal Lasers in Surgery and Medicine found IPL to be comparably effective to lasers across several uses, including pigmented lesions, vascular lesions and photodamaged skin, depending on the indication. That versatility is a big part of why IPL has stuck around for decades.

Where BBL HERO™ Comes In

BBL HERO stands for High Energy Rapid Output, and the name is doing real work. It is a high-intensity filtered pulsed light device built on the same broad-spectrum principle as IPL, but it’s engineered to deliver more energy in less time and with better cooling.

Two upgrades make BBL HERO stand out:

  1. Power and speed: HERO pulses faster and covers more area per pass, so a treatment that once took a while can move more efficiently across larger zones like the chest, back or hands.
  2. The design itself: Older IPL devices often “stamped” pulses one section at a time, whereas the HERO version of BBL runs in constant motion across the skin, gliding rather than stamping. That continuous movement is part of why it can treat more area in less time.

The device also uses adjustable filters to isolate specific wavelengths, which lets your dermatologist fine-tune the treatment for sun damage, redness, vessels or a dull complexion rather than taking a one-setting-fits-all approach.

The Science Behind Forever Young BBL™

A Stanford University study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that after three monthly BBL treatments, the gene expression of older skin cells shifted to more closely resemble that of younger, healthier skin cells. That is the science behind the “Forever Young BBL” maintenance approach, where regular sessions may help keep new pigment and redness from accumulating over the years.

BBL HERO™ vs. IPL at a Glance

BBL HERO and IPL share the same core mechanism. The difference is in horsepower, comfort and how efficiently a session runs, not in some entirely separate way of working.

Which One Is Right for You?

This is where a consultation earns its keep. The right choice depends on your skin tone, the concern you are addressing, how much surface area you want covered and how your skin tends to respond to light-based treatment.

If you are after a versatile pigment and redness treatment, IPL remains a reliable, well-studied option. If you are treating broader areas or want the speed and energy of the newer platform, BBL HERO may be the better fit. Both typically call for a series of three or more sessions spaced about a month apart, and both pair well with other treatments. BBL is often combined with the deeper-reaching HALO hybrid fractional laser when surface pigment and underlying texture both need attention.

Can I Use an At-Home IPL Device Instead?

A quick caution on the at-home version. Drugstore IPL gadgets exist, but professional devices operate at energy levels and with safety controls that home tools do not match, and getting the settings wrong on pigment-prone skin can backfire. This is a treatment where who is holding the device matters.

That is the case at AboutSkin Dermatology and Aesthetics in Greenwood Village, serving the greater Denver area. Our practice is directed by Dr. Joel L. Cohen, a Board-Certified Dermatologist who is fellowship-trained in lasers and was one of the first physicians in the country to use the “in motion” HERO version of BBL and help contribute to its settings. Dr. Cohen has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor more than a dozen times and a 5280 Magazine Top Doctor in Denver, and the practice carries one of the most comprehensive collections of laser and energy devices in the region. When a treatment comes down to calibration and judgment, that depth of experience is the part you cannot buy at a counter.

Light Work, Done Right

Same family, different muscle. Whether your spots call for tried-and-true IPL or the faster pulse of BBL HERO, the device is only as good as the dermatologist dialing it in.
