patients using sunscreen protection

You bought a good sunscreen, you put it on before heading out and you feel set for the day. Most of us stop thinking about it right there. The trouble is that sunscreen only works as well as the way you use it, and a few small habits can quietly cut its protection in half. Living in Denver raises the stakes, since the mile-high altitude means stronger UV and more sunny days than most of the country sees.

Here are the common SPF mistakes the Board-Certified Dermatologists at AboutSkin Dermatology and Aesthetics run into most often, along with the easy fixes that keep your sun damage risk down.

You’re Probably Using Too Little

This is the big one. Sunscreen earns its SPF rating in labs at a specific thickness, but research shared by the Skin Cancer Foundation shows most people apply only 25 to 50 percent of that amount. Skimp on the layer, and your real protection falls faster than you would guess. An SPF 50 applied too thinly can perform more like an SPF 15.

The fix is simple once you can picture it. For your body, aim for about a shot glass worth. For your face and neck, roughly half a teaspoon does the job. Put it on 15 minutes before you go outside so it has time to bind to the skin.

The Spots Almost Everyone Skips

Even careful people tend to treat sunscreen like face cream and stop at the jawline. The forgotten zones add up: the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, your lips, the part in your hair and your scalp, plus the tops of your hands and feet. These areas catch plenty of sun, and the scalp and ears in particular are common places for skin cancers to surface later. Lips need their own attention, so keep an SPF lip balm within reach and swipe it on when you reapply everything else. A quick head-to-toe check before you walk out the door saves you from the patchy burns that give away a missed spot.

Counting on Your Makeup to Do the Job

A foundation or tinted moisturizer with SPF 30 sounds like a handy shortcut, and the marketing leans into it. The catch is the amount. To reach the SPF printed on a makeup label, you would need to apply far more than anyone wears for a normal look, often several times more. So the sunscreen built into your makeup is a welcome bonus on top of a dedicated layer, not a stand-in for one.

Put your actual sunscreen on first, let it settle for a minute, then apply makeup over the top. On any day you will be outside for more than a quick errand, that base layer is what carries the load.

One Application in the Morning Isn’t Enough

Sunscreen wears off. Sweat, water, towel drying and plain time all chip away at the film protecting your skin, which is why a single morning application rarely lasts a full day outdoors. The general guidance is to reapply every two hours while you are out, and right after swimming or a heavy sweat. Water-resistant formulas buy you time, but the label only promises 40 or 80 minutes in the water, not immunity for the whole afternoon.

If reapplying over makeup feels fussy, a powder SPF made for touch-ups makes it easier to stay consistent. The goal is to keep the barrier topped up rather than letting it fade away by lunchtime.

That Bottle Might Be Past Its Prime

Sunscreen does not last forever, and heat makes it worse. Every bottle carries an expiration date, and once it passes, the active ingredients start to break down and shield you less. Storage counts too. A tube that spends the summer in a hot car, a beach bag or a sunny windowsill degrades faster than one kept somewhere cool, even before its printed date. If the texture has separated, turned clumpy or smells off, retire it.

As a rule of thumb, most sunscreens last about three years unopened, and less once you have broken the seal, so replacing your bottle each summer is rarely a waste. Your skin is only as protected as the product still doing its job inside the tube.

Saving It for Sunny Days Only

Clouds feel protective, but a good share of UV passes right through them, which is how people come home pink from an overcast afternoon at the lake. UV does not take time off in the winter, either. At Denver’s elevation, the sun runs stronger year-round, and UVA rays, the ones tied to aging and long-term damage, reach your skin every day no matter the forecast. That is the case for treating sunscreen as a daily habit rather than a beach-day-only product. A moisturizer with built-in SPF for everyday errands, then a dedicated sunscreen when you know you will be out for a while, covers most of life without much fuss.

Getting the Basics Right

None of this asks you to buy more product, only to use what you already own a little better. And the advice rests on real science. Dr. Joel Cohen and his colleagues published research in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology showing that daily use of a sheer mineral sunscreen led to measurable improvements in signs of facial photodamage across every skin tone over 12 weeks. Dr. Cohen is fellowship-trained in lasers and has been named a Castle Connolly and 5280 Magazine Top Doctor. “The best sunscreen is the one you will use correctly and often,” he says. If you are not sure which formula fits, our team can walk you through mineral versus chemical options.

Give Your Sunscreen a Fighting Chance

Peak summer is no time for a sunscreen running at half power. Fix the amount, hit the spots you usually miss and top it up throughout the day, and the bottle you already own starts doing its real job.
