Facial fillers like Juvederm® from our Denver-area injectors are effective for smoothing etched-in facial wrinkles, lifting the skin in areas where it’s sunken or hollow, and refining facial contours to create a more youthful appearance.

The fillers in the Juvederm® collection are all made up of a gel-like substance that contains hyaluronic acid as a main ingredient. However, each is formulated in a unique way with its own specific strengths and benefits and is designed to be used in a specific part of the face. The fillers vary in terms of how “light” or “heavy” they are, in terms of volume restoration.

Understanding the benefits of each filler can help you as you consider your options—but don’t feel that you have to become an expert on the injectables. Our team is here to guide you, led by Dr. Joel Cohen, who has been part of numerous clinical trials for injectable fillers, including Juvederm® for addressing nasolabial folds and marionette lines

Dr. Cohen has published more than 300 articles and three textbooks and has personally trained the AboutSkin doctors, who are all board-certified dermatologists. At AboutSkin, only our doctors inject fillers (and BOTOX®) because we believe you should have the highest level of training for these products.

The truth is that no one filler is technically “better” than the other. The right choice for each patient depends on their aesthetic goals and factors unique to their skin and appearance.

With that in mind, here is a look at two of the most commonly used fillers Juvederm® Ultra and Ultra Plus. Here’s how they compare:

Juvederm® Ultra

Ultra is approved for reducing moderate to severe wrinkles around the nose and mouth, such as smile lines and parenthesis lines. It can also be used for volumizing thin lips. It is silkier and more lightweight compared to Ultra Plus, which makes it better for more superficial wrinkles and for lip enhancement. The results can be delicate and subtle.

Juvederm® Ultra Plus

Ultra Plus is thicker and more stable than Ultra because of its larger particle size, which can sometimes create a more dramatic look. It is often the longer lasting of the two fillers. Ultra Plus is normally injected into a deeper layer of the skin compared to Ultra and is better for addressing more severe volume loss.
